Group Process Research Institute is dedicated to the study of group process, particularly as it may be useful in recovery from addiction and other compulsive behaviors. The Institute's primary research focus is the role of group process in the treatment of compulsive overeating (often referred to as obesity) and the other eating disorders. Parallel to this research, an equally The Circle important focus is evolving concerning the treatment of traumatic stress, which has many implications for the theory and practice for the treatment of addiction. The research emphasizes the process of recovery and healing, rather than the usual quantifiable objective measures of symptom reduction or remission. In addition to group psychotherapy and support group research, the Institute also studies educational groups, institutional groups and corporate groups.

Teaching is another important objective. Embracing a multi-disciplinary approach, the Institute offers lectures, workshops, and seminars on various topics. These presentations are also designed to provide continuing education for health care and treatment providers, including consultation for institutions and corporations wanting to develop more adaptive group processes to advance their work.

Group Process Research Institute acknowledges the intellectual foundation provided by our colleagues at the American Group Psychotherapy Association, the American Society of Addiction Medicine and the AK Rice Institute. We would also like to express our sincerest gratitude to our patients, for inspiring our convictions and for contributing indispensably to our learning.
